Climate & Fluid Physics Laboratory
Overview

The Climate & Fluid Physics Laboratory is the preeminent research facility for experimental fluid dynamics in Australia, and we strive to expand this to the world. By performing the highest quality fluid dynamics experiments, our research deepens the fundamental understanding of Earth’s climate system and processes that are unable to be explored in other ways. The research infrastructure contained within the Climate & Fluid Physics Laboratory represents Australia’s national capability in the experimental fluid dynamics space. Our contributions to education and outreach provide learners with a unique perspective that they are unable to obtain elsewhere; this is further enhanced by our embrace of modern education techniques and technologies that both strengthen learning outcomes and widens our learning audience far beyond the ANU classrooms.

Dr Callum Shakespeare
Academic Supervisor

Callum leads the Climate & Fluid Physics group within the Research School of Earth Sciences, and is the laboratory academic supervisor. Callum’s broad research interests include the fundamental dynamics of the ocean, atmosphere and climate, which he investigates using a wide range of scientific approaches.

Dr Kial Stewart
Academic Operations

Kial leads the academic operations in the laboratory, which involves overseeing of projects, experiments, laboratory resources, teaching activities, and outreach. Kial also maintains a primary role in several ongoing experiments, including the Large Rotating Annulus and Sea Ice Facility.

Mr Jim Sweetman
PhD Student

Jim is a current PhD student working on a project with the ice-ocean interaction apparatus exploring the sensitivity of ice sheet melt rate to various ocean dynamics, including internal waves.

Mr Angus Rummery
Laboratory Manager

Angus is our dedicated technician responsible for the design, construction, modification, and maintenance of the laboratory equipment and experimental apparatus. As the Laboratory Manager, Angus leads to day-to-day activities in the laboratory, including safety and compliance aspects of operations.
